A father figure, a dear friend, a much loved president and a professional colleague - the late Dr Wee Kim Wee was all these and more to many who came to pay their last respects at the Istana on Tuesday.

Facts about the late Dr Wee Kim Wee
Many people remember him as a man who had lived a full life.
Dr Wee Kim Wee was elected President of the Republic of Singapore by Parliament on 30 August 1985.

In his younger days, Mr Wee was an active sportsman. He played badminton, table tennis, basketball and soccer.
In 1937, he was junior singles badminton champion of Singapore. He spent many years serving various badminton bodies of Singapore and Malaya (later Malaysia), and ended up as president of the Singapore Badminton Association and vice-president of the Badminton Association of Malaya.
He had also been active in social services serving in various clubs and associations. For several years, he was chairman of SATA (Singapore Anti-Tuberculosis Association).


Mr Lee : "The most important thing about him was his very easy and unassuming way with people. He liked people, people sense this and they like him.


"He was a very gracious, very kind, and warm person. And it was a first impression, a very reliable one, because that's the way he was; and when he was president, that's the way many Singaporeans sensed him and warmed to him." - CNA /de/ct
